The Choice To Numb It Or Feel It

I have to say I have been wanting to write for the past couple of days and there seemed like one thing after another that came up. Saturday I spent at a conference, it was very good and something that I am grateful I attended. It was about wellness in all forms... I think we all need to hear more about how to care for ourselves better. So then when I got home that night I needed to do laundry as I had been neglecting it due to the vast amount of exercise I have been doing.

Then Sunday came around and I went to church, caught up on many of my blogs and then took a 5 mile walk with a friend. I was quite wiped out by the time I got back. You'd think I would have been able to sleep... but no... I am still waking up 3 to 5 times per night. It doesn't even seem to matter that I am eating great and exercising nearly every single day... Oh well, I am sure I will be able to sleep through a full night one of these days.
Just a quick update with my exercise, I am still going strong, I walked over 40 miles last week, I do feel better for it, as well I was able to drop some of the weight I had gained in July. Although I do want to lose pounds, it is not the most important thing, getting healthy by exercising daily and eating consciously is my main focus... everything else can and will follow. What I really want to gain from keeping my lifestyle changes is being healthy emotionally.

This past week has been a reflective one, I was thinking about what I wrote last week wondering if I really meant it...?  Then I remembered a quote about how we just need to fake it until we make it... I also realize that the longer I stay away from attempting to date, the harder it will be to go back. I can be a girl of excuses but I don't want to be her anymore... that girl with all the excuses was in a difficult place, one I never thought I would rise from.
Yet I did rise, and even though I am not completely hopeful that love will ever come my way, I know that if I don't put myself out there, it more than likely won't happen. Also a good friend reminded me that all I have to do is look back and see how far I have come... Difficult challenges are going to come, I know there are people that have dealt with trials I have no idea how they made it through, each day I am inspired with how they have overcome something and grown beyond what they thought they could ever have dealt with.

Remember that saying that Heavenly Father will not give us more than we can handle...? I was reminded that wasn't true, he actually gives us a little more so that we stretch and grow. The real question is if we want to grow...?  If we don't want to, we have the choice to give into the pain... however; I am here to say that numbing the pain only lasts so long, eventually we all have to deal with it... I know from personal experience that most times dealing with the pain, isn't nearly as bad as numbing it...

  1. Hi Launna! It sounds like you have been doing everything right...eating well, taking lots of walks and keeping busy. I think that sometimes when we cannot sleep it may not always be something to do with our eating or lack of exercise, it could also be a mental thing...such as something bothering us. I know that I sometimes over think things and this could be an issue with me in terms of how well I will sleep or not... Sending you a hug. :)

  2. Wow - 40 miles! That's impressive. I agree with you - I've found that dealing head on with things is the best way, rather than avoiding them. It seems that the worry and anxiety over a situation is often worse than just dealing with it. I hope you have a wonderful week!

  10. Numbing is postponing. No one can wish the stony part of the journey away. It must be walked.
It sounds like your on the right path.

  11. that is true--a great spin on it, to stretch and grow is why we are given these horrible things in life.

  14. Keep going. And I wouldn't think that if you stop dating for a while, you'll find it harder to go back to it. Take care of yourself first, and then when you're ready, you can try it again.

  15. "What I really want to gain from keeping my lifestyle changes is being healthy emotionally.” So much goodness in this post! I was thinking that you should be getting quite fit with all your exercising and that in itself will make you feel so much better. I still have a long way to go with my fitness but after six weeks of regular cycling I am beginning to feel the difference, too. I am sorry to hear that you are not sleeping well, though. I am struggling with that, too, mostly because of sleep apnea (I do use a cpap) and menopause, hot flashes sometimes wake me up. But I also find if I eat less at night and have less of a full stomach that seems to help my sleep quality. I am hopeful that as I lose weight I can eventually stop using the cpap and go back to more normal sleep. As for the dating I would agree that there is no harm in keeping yourself out there. You can set your own boundaries and just see how it goes. I know from my own experience that perseverance is what eventually led me to my husband :) Keep up the good work, you are doing great! xo

  18. The end of your post sums it all up so well, Launna--- "numbing the pain only lasts so long, eventually we all have to deal with it." That is so true. It doesn't go away until we deal with it.

  22. I agree with that statement of numbing the pain, but it could also refear to many other problems. Mostly they won't go away until, we deal with them, they'll only get worser while pretending they don't exciste. And at the end dealing with whatever came our way isn't as horrible as we expected, we're mostly just blinded by fear.
And of course never give up on love. From all positive energy comming from your posts, I can tell you're a wonderful persen, and I belive someone as wonderful, who could apriciate that, will come your way.
I'm also admirig your exercising. I've never been much of a walker, but I do get around on my bike a lot since I'm not a big fan of buses. :)
Hope you have wonderful end of the week, stay awsome!

  24. Hi launna...
I am ashamed to read your post. Ok i m little bit lazy to exercise regular, thats why i give you two thumbs up. Yups take care and love our self is important and healty is expensive. Our body need energy, mineral and vitamins for activity, and we can got all of them from eat kinds of food. I happy to hear that exercise and control the menu is your priority.

A pain made people more stronger. A pain gave them a lesson. May you will felt the pqin for one year, two year or more but by the time you will forgot. But when you are give up the regret for a lifetime

Well i m not a prefessional but let me give my trick for a deep sleep. Do exercise in day , Before sleep first take a bath with warm water, eat something it can be an apple etc, drink a glass of milk (don't chocolate milk, better a vanilla milk), reflection and thanks for all you got, praying, the last smille and suggestion your self tommorow will be better than this day. Happy sleeping dear...

  26. So I was right there with you on wanting to write, but then I'd sit down and eek out 3 to 500 words. And that's it. I was scratching my head. So after a little prayer and much wondering if I'd just lost it, I pounded out 4000 words in one day. How's that for a tender mercy? He's there in the details, eh?

  29. I am so glad to read you're feeling more positive about things, your friend is a wise one, sometimes when your present looks bleak, all you have to do is look back and see how far you've come. You're a strong woman but even the strongest falls sometimes but what matters most is your decision to get up or stay down and wallow in despair. This post makes me smile, I'm honestly glad that you're feeling better. xx

  30. Hey Laura, honestly. I totally hear ya. It is in exactly these moments that we need to remember the numerous versus where God reminds us that HE is the NUMBER ONE person who has to fill us, no a man. Even with a husband, wives always complain that they aren't fulfilled, why? Because God is the only one who can really fulfill us. What does that mean? Getting into the word? Yes... means make that time and get in the Word. <3 Hang in there Lady, and get into the word! This is my study from a few days ago, maybe it will help you! 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."" Ephesians 5:15-20

    God bless,
    Christine

  32. Sweet Launna, I'm so proud of you that you take such amazing care of yourself :) I wish I could go on one of these nice long walks with you!
In my experience numbing the pain is much worse than dealing with the pain. Especially when it comes to numbing a pain for a whole lifetime...it always bursts out at some point and the longer the wait the more severe the pain. I must admit that it still is easier often times to try to numb it first and deal with the explosion later, and then regretting that it wasn't solved in the first place. Sigh. I guess that's what also makes us human. But every conscious step towards dealing with pain right away is a good one! Hold on to that. It doesn't matter if we fail sometimes, as long as we keep trying. And you are amazing at not giving up. I admire you for that!
I'm sending you lots of long big hugs,
    Beate <3

Hope you are blessed with all the wonderful little things that make the day go better.

  38. I'm sorry to hear that you havne't been able to get a proper sleep, my friend. Have you ever tried taking something before going to bed? I heard some people drink a glass of wine, others drink a cup of chamomile or valerian tea. Maybe something like that might help! :)
I agree with dealing or numbing pain can be almost equally hard. I think numbing pain could seem a convenient option at first but it can't last forever, soon or later we have to face the "monsters" of our lives and deal with them. That's the only way we grow as humans and it can also serve as a clousure to certain traumatic chapters of our lives. :)

But I have to keep reminding myself that I will be able to again, I am slowly recovering from my injuries. Reminding myself of how far I have come in certain situations is one of the main motivators for me,

  66. The only time it's a good idea to numb ourselves from fully experiencing our feelings is when we're sitting in a dentist's chair prepping for a root canal, or lying on the table in an operating room.

Keep up the good work. Do you allow yourself to truly relax for a little while before crawling into bed for the night? Turn off the TV, put down that book, and no heavy thinking allowed. Just sit back with your eyes closed, and listen to some soothing music.
