Mediocrity Is Tenacious

I read this quote the other day and it resonated with me ... my friend and I were discussing how throughout our lives we have overcome one challenge or another and how good we felt about it. I told her how I was in the zone when I lost weight a few years ago and that when I was hurt, I let it slide and lately I have let mediocrity take over and why? Because it was easy. It was almost like I accepted it and believed it would just be better to give up...

After I read this quote it made me remember how we might stumble and fall but we have a choice of staying there or getting back up, dusting myself off and making another choice.... because it is right, we are never done. There is no ending, there is only continual change. . . we don't just work out in the gym and say there, 'I'm done'... we can't just say I ate healthy and 'that's it'. I think we all want that, I know I wish it was easier as it sometimes feels overwhelming.
I am not back on track yet but I have a desire to get there, I haven't even had the true desire in such a long time. It has been frustrating to me as exercising is not easy at all, I am cognizant that I am going to have to put in more time at a slower and easier pace... I also need to commit to finding other ways to get to where I want to be. Just because I could walk for hours in the past doesn't mean that is the only way I can back to the path, the one where I felt healthy, strong and happy with where I was.  I was worried as winter is on its way and that time of the year tends to sideline me as it does many people...

Instead of thinking/believing I am set up to fail because of the weather, the weight and the physical pain I have... I just have to find another way, there is not just one path for us to get us to where we desire... There are many trails, falling backwards happens to us all, not staying there is a choice we each make. I was feeling helpless, out of control... sure there was no way to deal with the setback in my health...
Then I read the quote which popped out at me and reminded me I am tenacious, I have always been this way... I have made it through so many trials where once I was sure I wouldn't make it through. Like the quote says mediocrity is tenacious, I have to be more so... I need to be stronger than mediocrity... I cannot be comfortable when I make it to a certain destination... as the truth is that we should never be complacent and stop... we need to be reaching for the next desire that can help us grow.

I don't want to accept that failure is easier because I am tired of trying... that is definitely mediocrity that has found a way in ... basically, I let my guard down and I gave up but thankfully I don't have to stay there... I don't have to give up, I can keep fighting and I can succeed... I have to make that choice, I have done it in the past, I know I can do it again... that is how tenacity beats mediocrity...

  1. Years ago, my husband had a picture on the wall of his office at work. It showed a frog caught by the head in a big bird's mouth, but the frog had his hands around the bird's neck. The caption said: NEVER GIVE UP.

And that's the truth! Keep going. You'll find your way. :)

  2. Mediocrity does have a way of sneaking in and making you feel comfortable. It's hard to move forward though, if you're comfortable. I've been taking faith steps over and over again and they're not comfortable but they're paying good dividends. No idea what took me so long to step out of my comfort zone, but I'm sure glad I did. :)

  10. Woot, woot! Lets kick mediocrity in the rear! =) I'm okay with blending into a crowd, but on a personal level, I always crave growth--in whatever realm I may occupy. I think we all do. It's part of our nature. No one wants to stagnate, but it is easy to let life take the wheel. You have to consciously be driving if you want to get where you intend, eh? You and me, let's do this exercise thing. Even if it's only ten minutes a day until we build up to something better. We can do this!

  13. I can so relate to this! Weight has always been a "touchy" subject for me - 9 out of 10 times I feel I am not good enough just because I am fat! Exercising is not easy - I've tried and given up...then got back on track...but after working out and still not dropping the kilos as fast as I'd like is heart-breaking....Also, maintaining the lost weight is a pain - I guess I just don't try hard enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle *sigh*

I'd just like to tell you not to be so hard on yourself. I don't think you are slipping into mediocrity...It's a struggle, and as you won't ever give up (we are all here to support you), you are sure to win the battle!

    Best Wishes!!

  14. It's not easy to go on fighting and never never giving up, Launna. Sometimes I think we are as Rocky Balboa, do you remember him?, he goes down and then stands up, never beaten because his inside strength makes him a great fighter.

  17. I was needing this. I've been caught up in my depression in the last few weeks and I had zero desire to do nothing, you could say I was less than mediocre. This text inspired me to get back in track, to do things I should have been doing for a while and try some news things to get over this dark fase. Thank you again Launna, you are always a ray of sunshine in my life x3

  22. One thing I always tell myself is, "There is nothing to it, but to do it!" I don't remember where I heard it, I know it was on TV at some point when I was a kid. It stuck in my head, and I have used it so many times. Instead of talking about doing whatever it is, it's better to get started for myself. Then when I have finished the task, I feel a great sense of accomplishment and the only person that I had to be accountable to was myself. That's how I deal with mediocrity, when I come face to face with it. I hope you stay positive and beat those hurdles Launna!

  25. Somehow I am stuck in this mediocre life bcoz i find comfort in it which is actually bad bt that does not mean I have not gone through trials and troubles and I tell you there has been no end to it... I have had such emotional, depressing and frustrating days bt I would praise myself for coming out of it everytime and I know I have been a fighter.. everyone has their way of getting over problems and as u rightly put what u may have done years ago may not work now.. My phone not working has been a good lesson for me in a way as it gave me time to reflect on my life even though it was hard and frustrating.. Looking forward to new beginnings.. have a great week ahead Launna ♥

  26. Oh those challenges. You just don't know what they might be. Work, lately..has been a struggle. Its as if you can't do enough. It doesn't help the AC quits. I didn't even want to be there, and I still get put down and yelled at. Yes, even at the library..it can be miserable. So, its good to be prayerful..to endure those moments you hope don't last too long. Great to see your update!

  27. You know, Launna? Slip into mediocrity is one of my biggest fear!
And this is pretty understimated on the majority of the people!
I was so relieved when I've read this post, since it means I'm not the one who think that way!
I'm always a bit scared to talk of it because I don't want to give the wrong idea to be a pride and insensitive person who think that is better than others, for the only fact I costanty try to don't give up and to improve myself despite everything.
Obviously it's pretty normal that sometimes happen challenges and struggles that stop or slow you, but isn't overcome them and try to still be good that makes us better person? :)

As I look back at my life there were so many times I felt beaten, but something in me just kept getting back up, determined to do something better and to be better. I admire that you do that, and graciously share it with others so we can remember to get strong and stay strong, never allowing an obstacle to be better than we are. HUGE Hugs...RO

But I understand that it can be difficult if you've gone a long time without doing it. I went a few months without doing much and I felt terrible. Just remember that any kind of exercise will ALWAYS make you feel better <3 I've never regretted a work out :)

  44. Hi Launna, that quote is deep on all levels. I love it too. We must never give in or give up. Life is full of falling and getting back up, then keep pushing. The cycle repeats. And with each fall, comes lessons we need to do better subsequent times. Lessons we need to ultimately 'grow'. The second quote also resonates with me. And gosh you have a fire in you Launna. Mediocrity doesn't stand a chance with you. So get back you will and I pray we all do. Cos just like that quote, it's hard to beat a person who gets back up.

  60. Very inspiring! I have noticed to that walking I like to do is in a limited time these days. The fall..and it seems to be shorter than ever. Life is always evolving. At one time, it was easier to move with it, but then more obstacles are more apparent as we age. Then when you here from your physician..walking is not enough..you need to keep that heart-rate up. Still, we need to be diligent and that can be the hardest. Just yesterday I heard about FTD. I thought it had something to do with flowers..no dementia. I thought I had to be hearing that wrong. How, this certain kind can affect you as early as your 40's where you lose the idea of understanding language.

So much to be thankful for and so much to be worried about, too. All the best to your writing! And goals!

  61. Wonderful post - it gave me strength where I didn't know it was needed. Sigh - the cycles of life. I'm getting ready to get my exercise in (the one I recently wrote about). Yesterday that humidity and temp was just nice enough that I was able to enjoy a walk and it felt so good. Nothing like getting outside, but when you can't you've got to push through your other options. Just as a side note, I'm going to msg you a link in FB something I wrote once upon a time. I read it from time to times and it still resonates with me for one reason or another. It's title Failure is not an option.

  64. I think that words have the power to turn tables for us. They could change everything about a person.
my story is similar, a poem 'if' changed it all for me.

f you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

The one you quoted is an exceptional piece. I'm adding it to the list of things that keep me going.

    Take care Launna :)
